The Intituto Português do Sangue e da Transplantação, IP (IPST,IP) was created in 2012 by a Law (L n.º 39/2012, of February 16), that merged the Instituto Português do Sangue, IP and the Autoridade para os Serviços de Sangue e da Transplantação, becoming the Official Authority for ensuring and regulating, at a national level, the activity of transfusion medicine and transplantation, as well as for ensuring the donation, procurement, testing, processing, preservation, storage and distribution of human blood, blood components, organs, tissues and cells of human origin.
The IPST, IP, which as formally assumed the ASST attributions in organ and tissue donation and transplantation in August 22nd 2012, is strongly committed in continuing the work carried by ASST, increasing organ, tissues and cells donation and transplantation, mainly through training and sensitization sessions for all professionals involved in this area, general public, and also in the promoting living donation programs.
