The Department of Medical and Public Health Services of the Ministry of Health is the competent Authority relating to the Organ Donation and Transplantation issue since the Transplantation clinic of Nicosia General Hospital is under its responsibility. Cyprus Government is taking now direct control of the transplant program in an effort to comply to EU legislation. Until recently ( December 2010) and for the past 24 years , kidney transplants ( the only transplant programme in Cyprus) had been carried out successfully ( more than 900 kidney transplant from living and cadaveric donors) at the Paraskevaidion Surgical & Transplant Center a non-profitable private organization .The Ministry of Health decided to create and developed a new Transplant center located in the New Nicosia General Hospital (Governmental), completely belong to the Public( National ) Health System. The new transplant center started on January 2011 with a new staff and structures.
